Optometrist Visits

How is your eyesight these days? Do you get a little blurry from looking at the computer screen for too long? It is important to get that checked out by visiting the optometrist.

The optometrist will keep your eyes in check with a regular maintenance check up on your eyes. They will do a series of tests that will tell you the condition of your eyes and if there is a problem spotted, how to keep it from getting worse or to make it go away completely.

A lot of the time people will tell their optometrist the problems and symptoms they are experiencing and the doctor will run specific tests to tell you whether you have complications or if it's just due to bad air in the season, bad diet and lack of sleep, or allergies.

The name Optometry comes from the Greek "optos" and "metron" which means "visible" and "measure". It was first used in the late 1800s as the name of doctors who are now trained and licensed to diagnose and treat disorders of the eye system. Over the years they have improved their tools and expertise significantly so they can catch all problems.

Your eyesight is so valuable that it is important to be proactive with your eye health. Maintaining your eyesight is one of the most important things that you can do for them to prevent losses. Choosing the best health care provider for you is imperative actually because they need to have the right training and experience to give you the proper diagnosis and treatments. They should be informative and promote the best possible outcome as well as guide your concerns in the right direction.

Eye doctors must have a solid set of credentials which is one indicator of a good health care provider. Make sure that the doctor has all the right training he or she needs to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases. That can help you decide which one in your area will be best for you. They need to have adequate accredited medical institution diplomas to best represent their knowledge of optometry.

The more experience an eye doctor has the better your visits are going to go. You will get better results from a doctor that has had more practice time. If they have been in the same city or region for their entire career that is fine as long as they have a hefty bulk of experience under their belt to provide the best service for you.

What Is a Behavioural Optometrist?

The people are often confused as to how a Behavioural Optometrist differs from regular optometry. This failure to recognize the difference between the two can lead to children having less than adequate eye testing, especially with regards to learning difficulties. Therefore it is important for parents to understand the difference between a Behavioural Optometrist and other types of vision care professionals.

The Philosophy of the Behavioural Optometrist

The Behavioural Optometrist differs from standard practice in his basic philosophy. As a Behavioural Optometrist, I do not treat eyeballs but rather consider the entire person, including an examination not only of their eyes but also of the way that they take in, organize and use the visual information supplied by the eyes.

Most optometrists and eye care professionals treat standard eye conditions such as long site, short sight, astigmatism and eye disease. As a Behavioural Optometrist, I treat all of these conditions also but strive to go beyond this to look at how the individual is using the information obtained through the visual system in their everyday lives. This means that I go beyond just testing the refractive error of the eyes, trying rather to understand how a person uses their focus, eye coordination, eye movements and visual perception.

This change of philosophy is especially important when it comes to children with learning disabilities, because most children with learning problems can see both the board and their books well. In such cases it is clearly not a lack of seeing ability that is affecting their learning, but rather the inability to interpret, understand and manipulate the visual information that they have taken in through their eyes and visual system. The Behavioural Optometrist will not only prescribe the appropriate lenses, but will also often prescribe vision therapy to help the child develop true understanding of the subject matter and help them to develop the skills that they need to learn efficiently throughout their life.

The Creativity of the Behavioural Optometrist

One of the things I love about being a Behavioural Optometrist is that I am often called upon to do more than churn out the appropriate numbers required for spectacle prescriptions. Sure, I prescribe lenses just like a regular eye care professional, but I'll often vary the power and design of these lenses depending on the specific tasks and needs of the patient. In short, I go beyond just reproducing the numbers I have measured, but rather spend time creatively thinking about the best lenses to suit the patient's needs, whether they are truck drivers, computer users, students or homemakers.

I also have the opportunity to be creative with regards vision therapy, designing new and innovative therapies, exercises and games to help children with learning disabilities reach their full potential in the classroom. These have become very successful and we have seen amazing improvement among the children who have pursued these therapies, and vision therapy remains a central part of my practice which is both creative and radically different from my peers.

My Journey as a Behavioural Optometrist

The reason that I've studied and pursued becoming a Behavioural Optometrist is because I have my own unique journey and story when it comes to learning.

Amazingly, I made it through grade school, high school and university with a focusing and eye coordination problem that limited the amount of time I could concentrate on near objects. I found myself dividing my study time up into 20 minute slices, so I would study for 20 minutes then have a drink, study another 20 minutes before going to the bathroom, and so on. I even made it through optometry school having my eyes tested a dozen times, always being told I was not long sighted and therefore my eyes were perfect.

However, when I became interested in Behavioural Optometrist, I discovered that my unusual study habits were due to focusing and eye coordination difficulties that had remained undetected in my regular vision test. I've returned from my first Behavioural Optometrist seminar to my own practice, made up of different pair of reading glasses, and these radically changed my life! I can now sit at a computer all read for hours as a result of the special lenses I was able to prescribe once I recognised the problem.

So if you want vision care that goes beyond the basic eye conditions and eye disease detection, a trip to the Behavioural Optometrist could be a life changing moment both for yourself and your children.
