Conjunctivitis and eye abrasions are two known dangers that are associated with cosmetic contact lenses. Corneal edema--an infection in which the cornea becomes swollen--is another risk. It may not sound serious but it can result in severe eye damage. Symptoms of this particular type of infection include bullae or the formation of painful blisters, or vision loss. For serious cases of corneal edema, a corneal transplant may be required to restore normal health of the eye.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or FDA, using cosmetic lenses can limit your vision and your ability to see contrast. Cosmetic lenses may reduce visual acuity and may affect your contract sensitivity. The FDA adds that constant wearing of cosmetic contact lenses which were purchased without any medical prescription may interfere with your driving and day-to-day activities.
According to Prevent Blindness.org, when wearing ill-fitting cosmetic contact lenses for too long, you may experience a corneal ulcer or open sores in the cornea. Corneal ulcers can progress quite rapidly and, when left untreated, may result in further eye infection. They can also cause scarring in the cornea. Any severe scarring in your cornea may result in having permanently impaired vision and, sometimes, blindness. Risks are higher for those who purchase their contact lenses over-the-counter since safety and health requirements are less stringent.
