People who have had difficulty with their contacts know what an inconvenience it is finding the perfect lenses that provide clear vision and comfort. Having said that, finding correct fitting lenses that provide maximum comfort and near perfect vision can make all the difference between life and death, literally. People wear corrective lenses for a mixture of reasons. Most people wear them due to the impression it creates, job demands and participating in activities that are more enjoyable without glasses.
Sometimes, as people age, they need prescription lenses to correct their vision. The problem occurs when these same people drive without making certain they have the best fitting contact lenses available and more importantly ones that correct their sight. There are several potential problems that can arise from driving without the correct lenses for their vision impairment.
When people drive without having the proper prescription, their vision can become distorted in certain situations such as low light conditions or when the sun is low in the sky; obviously, this is not safe. When the driver cannot clearly see other vehicles, people or animals that could be in the road, they are putting themselves and others at risk. For people who have worn them for a while, these changes might sneak up on them and they may not even be aware that they need a new prescription. This clearly shows how important a regular check-up is.
There could be other problems apart from having the right prescription for you. As a new wearer of contacts, it is not uncommon for people to try different brands to try and find the brand that fits the most comfortably. Sometimes new wearers believe that as their eyes adjust to having a foreign object placed in their eye (the contact lens), their eyes will "settle down" and their vision will get clearer as they get used to wearing contacts. This might turn out to be true, but it can be dangerous to drive whilst waiting for your eyes to adjust to this new feeling. In the meantime, their eyes might feel extreme discomfort, which can be distracting to the driver, or their vision might be blurry. In either case, the driver is putting themselves and other drivers in danger.
Wearers can help make the road a safer place by making sure they have the best contacts available for them. They also need to go for regular checkups to ensure that they have the most up-to-date prescription needed. By taking these precautions, the road will remain a safer place.
Contact lenses are now also available in multi focal contact lenses, for people used to wearing multi focal glasses.
