Problems With Silicone Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are devices used for the purpose of eye vision correction. These are considered to be cosmetic in nature and fall under the therapeutic form of treatment. Contact lenses are usually placed on the cornea of the eye.

Newer technology and advancements in medical science have enabled the development of contact lenses for conditions like astigmatism. Earlier hard contact lenses were available for common use and were not very popular. The main reason for this was their level of discomfort. The newer versions of soft contact lenses provide flexibility for the eye. With soft contact lenses the cornea and the eye can breathe better, resulting in reduction of common sore eye problems. These include red eye syndrome, itching and drying up of the eye.
Contact lenses reduce the chances of the eye getting ample supply of oxygen. In this case protein deposits find it easier to get deposited over a period of time. For people who wear contact lenses regularly this problem can occur sooner than other people who only wear lenses occasionally.
Due to the lack of oxygen content, the eyes dry up easily. The resultant consequence is a combination of redness, itching and burning sensation.
Risks of eye infection are increased when contact lenses are worn over a stretched period of time. This is also true, as the lenses do not have the ability to self cleanse, unlike the eye, which can clean itself with a single tear.
Lenses are used to achieve better vision, and when the user is not wearing them, his vision is compromised. At this point handling a transparent lens can be a task, and often results in lost contact lenses.
Contact lenses have become friendlier over time, yet experts still do not recommend extended usage of a single pair of contact lenses.
The eye needs oxygen to breathe. When an alien object is covering the cornea, it becomes difficult for the eye to breathe.
The lack of oxygen, and inability of the eye to tear up, causes dehydration and dryness in the eye. If this is not taken care of, more severe problems may arise in the future. Dryness is experienced mostly by users toward the end of the day.
The risk of diseases like contact lens-related papillary conjunctivitis is increased with the usage of contact lenses.
